Research Positions

The funding available for research students will fluctuate based on the research group’s success in attracting external funding from federal and state sources.  The types of students that Dr. Williams is typically interested in include:

 

Type #1:  Mechanical/manufacturing students

  • interests in machine design, manufacturing, instrumentation
  • SolidWorks proficiency
  • experience with MATLAB, LabVIEW, Arduino
  • hands on experience with machining (mill, lathe) or electronics
  • enrolled in mechanical engineering (or mechanical engineering technology), electrical engineering (or electrical engineering technology)

 

Type #2:  Engineering or computer science student networking experience for a funded research position (stipend + tuition support).

  • US citizen (this is non-negotiable based on the funding agency)
  • Networking admin experience
  • Comfortable in Windows and Linux
  • Vitualization experience (vCenter and vSphere) is a plus
  • Proficiency in 2+ programming languages
  • MS or PhD student preferred, but undergrads with the right skills/background will be considered

A short research interest statement (2-3 paragraphs) that includes a) why you are interested in my research group b) what particular skills/attributes you think are most relevant in considering your application and c) a single picture of a meaningful project that you have worked on (CAD screenshot, electronics schematic, MATLAB GUI, graph of collected data, etc.)
  2. Your CV/resume
  3. Unofficial transcripts

Recommendations

I am glad to provide recommendations for students that I have worked with as they apply for job, graduate programs, and other opportunities.  To make sure that I have sufficient experience with you to write a compelling recommendation I only provide recommendations to students where at least one of the following is true

Graduate

  • I served as their advisor on their MS/PhD research
  • I served on their MS/PhD committee
  • They were a graduate student in my class

Undergraduate

  • I mentored them on a senior design team
  • They were involved in a student org that I mentored
  • They were in 2+ courses
