Graduate student, Pauline Karanja, is working to explore best practices for asset condition assessments of facilities. Many institutions and organizations operate with their internally developed methods, but Pauline is researching the existing state and federal reporting mandates and a possible standardization of condition assessment reports. A special thank-you to Jim Johnson (UNC Charlotte FCAP Manager) for serving on our expert panel. In March 2016, Pauline received word that her research was accepted as an APPA supported project:
“I am extremely pleased to tell you that your research application [“Standards of Practice for Facility Condition Assessments (FCA)”] has been reviewed by several of our research leadership team and approved as the newest research project of APPA’s Center for Facilities Research.”
Graduate student, Abhay Yerekar’s interest in computerized maintenance management systems led him to research the possibilities of using the data collected through work orders and internal documentation. Thank-you to Jim Johnson and Barry Shoemaker for providing a connection to real-world facilities.
Josh Parker researched the use of 3D Point Cloud (Lidar) scanning for facilities management and also for disaster recovery. In the summer of 2016, Josh collected scan data for the Mt. Holly Baptist Church fire. Data will be used for required redesign information after a recent fire.
