REU & Apprenticeship

2017 Army Research Office (ARO) Sponsored Apprenticeship Opportunities

Introduction of HSAP/URAP Programs*

Army Educational Outreach Program (AEOP) is comprised of Army-sponsored research, education, competitions, internships and practical experiences designed to engage and guide students and teachers in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM). AEOP provides opportunities for students to conduct real-world research alongside scientists and engineers in world-class facilities through a variety of apprenticeship programs, including High School Apprenticeship Program (HSAP) and Undergraduate Research Apprenticeship Program (URAP). The HASP supports high school juniors/seniors and the URAP support undergraduate students with science and engineering research experience under the direction of university researchers sponsored by the Army Research Office (ARO).

The HSAP and URAP are commuter programs through which students will develop skills in Army critical science and engineering research areas in a local university lab setting to prepare them for the next steps of their educational and professional career. HSAP and URAP participants will receive an educational stipend equivalent to $10 per hour for up to 300 hours total. The students contribute to the Army’s research in the laboratory while learning research methods, using advanced research equipment and becoming a part of an active research group. This authentic experience provides exposure to science and engineering research careers. At the end of the program, students will prepare abstracts documenting the research they performed during the apprenticeship. Guidelines and deadlines will be provided to students participating in the program.

 Project Description and Requirements

“Acquisition of Multi-functional Nanoprobe Station-based Measurement System for Comprehensive In Situ Materials Characterization and Measurement in SEM”, Code: BUNC72, Location: University of North Carolina at Charlotte, Mentor: Dr. Haitao Zhang. One HSAP position and one URAP position are available for Summer 2017.

Plasmonic nanoparticles can greatly enhance light absorption, light scattering, and charge separation and transfer in semiconductors. This project will focus on one-dimensional (1D) transition metal oxide nanostructures as non-metal plasmonic materials. Students working on this project will obtain experiences in (1) the synthesis of 1D nanostructures using chemical vapor deposition (CVD) method and (2) cutting-edge microscopic techniques with in situ sample manipulation, structure characterization, and property measurement on individual nanostructures.

For HSAP applicants, junior or senior high school students from local high schools are required. Applicants must have a minimum GPA of 3.5 (unweighted) with completion or currently enrollment in one or more Advanced Placement courses in Physics and Chemistry. URAP applicants must be a junior undergraduate student in science and engineering majors, have a minimum GPA of 3.0 (unweighted) and completion of courses related to materials science and engineering. Both HSAP and URAP applicants must submit a short CV, an official transcript, a letter of recommendation, and a one-page personal statement, describing their career goals, academic preparation, and previous research/working experiences. Minority students, women students, and students from other underrepresented groups are encouraged to apply.

Application

For further information, please visit AEOP website. For application, please visit for HSAP and for URAP opportunities. Application deadline is extended to March 12, 2017 at 11:59 pm EST. Please note: HSAP and URAP are non-residence programs for commuting students only. No housing allowance or meal plan is provided. Please be sure to apply for only university laboratories that you are able to commute to daily.
